Brian Ball is a Vancouver based Visual Artist and Designer. Born in Newfoundland, he completed his BFA in Visual Arts at Memorial University where he also fell in love with the world of Theatre. After completing his MFA in Theatre Design at UVIC, he moved to Vancouver to work in both Theatre and the Film industry. Brian has worked across the country and across B.C., and has taught design at Vancouver Island University(Theatre) as well as continuing his Art Practice based on the landscapes of Canada (specifically the East and West coasts).

Since isolation began in March of this year, along with the daily barrage of medical information and misinformation, I couldn’t help but reflect on the idea of a barrier/barriers (as in nature a thicket or dense growth) that both separates and protects us; social barriers between people (differences in beliefs, in access to healthcare and/or money, physical barriers that protect us like hospital gowns gloves and masks, and often emotional barriers that many of us have had to face while dealing with physical distancing, isolation and loneliness.
My newest artwork is still based in nature/on natural forms, but highly abstracted with multiple refarances (both visual and symbolical). I am very blessed to be living close to Nature, in the West End on the borders of Stanley Park, it has been my refuge, solace and inspiration for many years but much more frequently and potently now. My new works are inspired both my the many forms of plantlike and plant forms found in nature, and also how they often reflect our own internal biology.
