Audra Geras is a Canadian experimental new media fine artist. Her studio is based in Port Credit (Mississauga), Ontario. Audra is a hybrid with passions that lie in both the arts and science. She won a scholarship to study art on the weekends at the Ontario College of art (now OCAD) while still in high school, but was concerned about making a living as a fine artist. This led her to getting an honours degree in biology and winning another scholarship, and then a specialized degree in Art as Applied to Medicine, now known as visual biocommunications, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. 

Audra started her highly successful studio while still in university.  Audra's biomedical paintings have won over 100 international Awards of Excellence and have been exhibited world-wide in numerous group shows and in solo exhibits in New York, New Jersey, Washington, Basel, Budapest, London, Los Angeles and Toronto. Her work was also featured in the prestigious juried exhibition of biomedical art at TEDMED in San Diego.  

Audra began her fine art career working with traditional paint media but now works primarily digitally, painting with pixels rather than pigments, although also occasionally working in mixed media.  Audra's fine art is an essential expression of her inexhaustible creative drive. It allows her to shed the rigours of science and medicine to freely express her love of experimentation, colour, form, texture, light and line. The resulting images are uniquely beautiful 'evocative abstractions' with Audra's signature touch.

Audra believes strongly that art has the power to transport us back to a child-like state of wonder. “In my work as a professional biomedical artist, I most often depict subjects on a cellular and molecular level. I reveal that which can't be seen and strive for clarity and understanding. The goal behind my fine art is quite the opposite, it is to awaken an awareness of a deeper mystery. " Joseph Campbell wrote that “A real artist is the one who has learned to recognize and to render… the ‘radiance’ of all things as an epiphany or showing forth of the truth”. Campbell's words resonate in my core. Creating art with this goal in mind seems to me a singularly worthy aspiration.” 

 

Audra is a passionate colourist, perfectionist and natural-born experimenter. Her joyous exploration of digital media has expanded her artistic vocabulary and provided the freedom to discover innovative frontiers of artistic expression.
