Jason Shawn Hickman is a professional artist with ~14 years of experience with acrylic painting and sculptural art. Although painting since, 2007, Mr. Hickman took a five year sabbatical from his passion and recently returned refocused, revitalized and inspired, with his first recent painting in 2012.

Originally from Newfoundland, Mr. Hickman moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 2010. His art focuses on topics, which are drawn from his passions and experiences, whether it be people, places or things.

In a full time capacity, Mr. Hickman works in the film and television industry and has over 20 years of experience within the Animation arena

As a Newfoundlander, Mr. Hickman grew up beside the ocean, (it was outside his bedroom window), and was constantly reminded of the need to reduce, reuse and recycle, with trash and debris being constantly swept ashore. Not wanting to add to humanities carbon footprint, his goal was to find a medium to produce art, which could hold the complex textures (wood, water, concrete, etc.…), while reducing the need to use ‘new’ raw material, conserving the earth’s natural resources, while reducing the carbon footprint.

In the last several years, through trial and error, Mr. Hickman focused on transforming recycled and reclaimed commercially used rigid polyfoam, into gallery ready, fine art quality pieces. He has spent hours developing and perfecting the techniques he uses, during this transformation process from rigid polyfoam to acrylic paintings and sculpted art.

With these created techniques, he has achieved success in breaking down and converting, raw, salvaged pieces of second hand mediums, creating a variety of artistic textures using sticks, bricks, and rocks, to show a great variety of detailed surfaces, unachievable with a normal flat canvas. This `base’ form, has allowed for the creation of abstract and non-abstract landscapes, wildlife and oceanic still life sculptured art and acrylic paintings. The textures allow light to play a pivotable role in the expression. Depending on the eye of the beholder and desired effect, the positioning of the piece, in conjunction to its light sources, can easily alter the visual and emotional effect.

Adhering to this technique of creating his art pieces, Mr. Hickman focuses on the concept of thirds: one-third texture, one-third subject matter, and one-third visual impression, thus achieving balance of composition. The majority of his work is set on 4’ x 4’, but can range from 1’ x 1’ to 5’ x 12’ (or larger). Given the natural concepts of the artwork, the techniques along with the medium, allow the complete expression. With this concept, Mr. Hickman is able to create larger sized, heavily textured pieces, lightweight enough to hang with a single hook, while still being easily transportable.
