Jenna Robinson spent the first half of her life living in the Canadian Rockies and now resides in the Coastal Mountain Range in Squamish, BC.

She discovered her passion for painting in high school and continued to teach herself how to paint through experimentation. The inspiration to put brush to canvas comes from her outdoor lifestyle of exploring her local mountains. Always more content outdoors, Robinson uses painting to express and share her love for nature.

Robinson’s work is realistic, yet her focus on contrast lends a surreal element to her mostly acrylic portraits of Canadian mountains, reflections, and forests. Permeating each canvas is her belief that light is an infinitely creative force that plays on landscapes; it’s constantly shifting and revealing a new perspective on a familiar place. Her paintings portray captivating moments of alpenglow on the Tantalus Range, the last golden rays illuminating the Stawamus Chief and glowing sunsets in Howe Sound.

Robinson has been exhibiting in solo and group shows in the Sea to Sky Corridor (Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler) since 2012. She has performed live art demonstrations at fairs, corporate events, art events, and local festivals such as the Treeline Women’s Climbing Festival and the Constellation Festival. Her work has appeared repeatedly in the local newspaper, the Squamish Chief, as well as the international climbing magazine, The Alpinist.

’All or nothing’ is my unintentional perspective in life. Dramatic? Yes. Just like my paintings. Ironically, even though my paintings are bold and intense they inspire a sense of peace and reflection. I believe this sense of calm is born in a moment when something vast and majestic is encountered and it demands a ’pause’ from the mental chatter.

I love my research process because getting out into the mountains is a necessary part of inspiration. My paintings are inspired by photos taken during hikes, climbs, and days out in the backcountry on a splitboard. As a result, all my painting subjects are local and they reflect my own sense of identity and connection with nature.

Before I started painting, I was convinced that I would be an Impressionist obsessed with colour. Somehow I ended up being a Realist seduced by the power of light to alter and define our perception of the world. I’m captivated by the ability of light to manipulate the colours and definition of a landscape and transform it into something completely unfamiliar.
