I was born in Mozambique, Africa, and spent my childhood there. Later, I moved to Europe and studied in Portugal, Germany, England, and Denmark. A few years ago I moved to Canada with my family and we rented a small apartment in Port Moody,BC. I was aware of the limitations it would create (could not do any sculpting, it would be too noisy and dirty). So I thought it was my chance to go back to one of my favourite Media: photography. For several months I would get up really early, get on my bicycle and find subjects for my photos: parks, animals, people, streets and buildings, anything that had some unusual light or feature. I was enjoying it a lot! It was on one of those outings that I came across the Lapidary Club. I was very curious and the members of the club were so welcoming, that after a few hours on the cutting wheels I was in love! I had always loved to work with stone and metals, but working with gemstones was even more interesting. I studied under goldsmith/artist Tom Schlegel, whom was so generous he allowed me to use his fully equipped studio until I had enough resources to have my own. For two years I studied with him. It was a pleasure and a challenge. Lisa Elser, Tom’s wife is a famous artist, she is one of the crème de la crème faceters. She taught me how to facet and again, she too let me use her equipment. Life is opportunity and fortune, and I have been most fortunate in finding the right people, willing to help and to give.

I am a Designer, and passionate carver/gem cutter. I use gemstones and semi-precious stones from all over the world. I travel to collect them, and go to rock and gem shows to buy the rough. My work is divided into three different parts: Designing the piece, cutting the stones for them, and finally setting them in sterling silver or a combination of precious metals/materials. When I say I cut the stones I mean I do it from scratch, I buy/mine the rough rock, slab it, and then shape, sand and polish it on diamond wheels with different grits. I set these cabochons/cut /carved stones into rings, pendants, earrings or wire-wrap them in unusual, minimalist designs. My background training as a sculptor leads me to undertake designs outside the box. I consider my work to be wearable art, each piece is truly an unique piece of art. There are no repetitions of designs. My company is Eco-friendly and Eco-responsible. I reuse and recycle all my materials, and nothing goes to waste. Even the leftover bits of rock are donated to lapidary clubs for the enjoyment of their younger members. The precious metals are mainly salvaged from industrial scraps. My metal work is based on nature and I use the techniques I learned has a sculptor to bring my jewellery a different look and feel. I shape, form and texture my pieces has if they were small sculptures.
