Artist Statement
Michael Schwartz is an abstract painter who began his career in the film and television industry in Toronto. He graduated from York University's film school and built a successful career in the Canadian commercial industry. Eventually his passion for art led him to transition to a career as an artist. Born in Toronto to immigrant parents he grew up in a diverse ethnic neighbourhood which had a strong influence on his work.
His paintings often reflect the complexity and diversity of his personal experiences and are inspired by the work of Rothko, De Kooning, Pollock and Hartigan, all part of the abstract expressionist movement.
Schwartz's paintings are known for bold brushstrokes, dynamic compositions and effective use of colour.
Being self-taught has allowed Michael to approach his craft with a sense
of uninhibited exploration. He is not bound by formal techniques or preconceived notions, but rather guided by raw creative instinct. This freedom allows him to push the boundaries of his art. The spontaneous intuitive nature of his process invites viewers to engage with the artwork and find their own personal connection. The hope is that his work will bring some richness to someone else’s life
He is represented in Vancouver by TheGeorgeGallery
