Soi Yoon has recently graduated from Emily Carr University with a BFA degree in Vancouver, BC. She deals with various genres of art such as painting, illustration, sculptures, prints media, etc., mainly focusing on her pen illustrations and drawings, which stands as her own signature style.

My work portrays the everyday lives of modern people with a series called ‘A Modern Portrait’.

I mainly focus on expressing modern people’s individual identities and the various emotional changes they go through in their daily lives. My drawings are expressed through my own unique artistic style: pure, carefree, and at the same time, highly abstract.

It is a combination of innocent expressions with a pencil-like a child’s imaginative drawing and a rhythmical dynamics created through various lines dancing and overlapping each other. My drawing style leads the audience to a visual journey with intrigues and deep sensibilities.

One of my works ’A modern Portrait” series conveys a message encouraging people to ignore the distorted views of themselves through comparisons with others on the media and accept their own one and only beauties and identities. In fact, the series itself began with the artist questioning “Why should I draw people’s faces in the typical format everyone easily recognizes?”. Once someone looks at my work, the eyes, nose, and lips are replaced in a dynamic way almost giving an illusion that they are freely floating everywhere.

This is my hopeful intention that every person is different and unique in their own particular ways and should be loved the way they are born to be.
