Inspired by the wide ranging sounds of 20th Jazz music this series of paintings reflect sub genres of Jazz and highlight their particular qualities shown through the rich three dimensionality of the canvas' texture and colour. Created during a particularly long and hot Toronto summer I painted this piece while listening to a playlist of the top Free Jazz records made during the late 1950's and 60's. An avant garde style of Jazz music that attempted to change or creak down standard Jazz conventions of the past, experimenting with progression in tone, tempo and chord changes. Popularised by the likes of John Coltrane, Pharoah Saunders, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Horace silver to name but a few. The highpoint of this style is often noted as being John Coltrane's 1965 L.P titled "A Love Supreme". In this work I hope that the viewer will feel engrossed in experiencing the dynamic sounds of this art form expressed through colour, tone, texture, form, line and tone.
